The White Family
Buckinghamshire, Whitechapel & Hampshire
1700 - 1920

The White family has been traced back to Thomas White who was born in Wotton Underwood circa 1680. He and his wife, Ann, had six children. Their youngest son, Joseph White, was born in 1719. He married Elizabeth Fletcher at Wotton Underwood on 25 July 1752. His occupation was listed as Sojourner.

The son of Joseph and Elizabeth, also named Joseph, married Rose Oldaker in Wotton Underwood in 1791 and they had 11 children. Two of Joseph and Rose's children moved to Whitechapel in Middlesex. William, their youngest child, had moved to London by 1836. He and his wife Mary Ann (nee Cobden) lived in Whitechapel (Judith White, a fellow White family researcher is a descendant of William). Joseph and Rose's eighth child Benjamin also moved to Whitechapel.

The Whites of Wotton Underwood were christened, married and buried at All Saints' Church.

White Family Benjamin White, son of Joseph and Rose, moved to Whitechapel sometime prior to 1837. Benjamin was married twice, first to Mary Ann Longe who passed away sometime after 1851. Benjamin's second wife was Harriet Revell of London (daughter of Samuel & Jane Revell) whom he married on April 19, 1855. His occupation was listed as a Corn Chandler and the family lived at 28 Leman Street, St. Mary's, Whitechapel.

Benjamin's son Benjamin Revell White by second wife Harriet Revell was born in Whitechapel in 1857 but by the time of the 1881 census, he had moved on to Hampshire.

The White family did not settle long in Whitechapel. In 1881 (British census), Benjamin Revell was found living as a boarder at the residence of Charles Gavin at Norwich Rd Laurel Cottage in Holdenhurst, Hampshire. He was 24 years old and working as a Coal Agent. Benjamin married Emily Jane Clement in 1883 in South Stoneham, Hampshire.

In 1901, Benjamin and Emily were living at Coalville, 58 Princess Road in Branksome, Dorset with their 5 children. Benjamin was listed as a Coal Merchant Manager while the eldest daughters, Annie (17) and Florence (15) worked as Confectioner's Assistants.

Benjamin's eldest son, Alfred Revell White was born in Bournemouth in 1889. He married Roberteena McClelland and they had 2 children, Revell Blackwood and Patrick, both born in Norfolk. Alfred was a Sergeant Major in the Royal Hussars and was later a Chemical worker.

Alfred's eldest son, Revell Blackwood White, was born in Norfolk in 1921. Revell served with the Royal Navy on the HMS Exeter during World War II, a ship "famous for her role in the Battle of the River Plate and the sinking of the German "Pocket Battleship" the Graf Spee on 13 Dec 1939." He married Hilda Bocock of Washingborough, Lincoln in 1943. They settled (for a while) in Hamworthy Poole, Dorset and had 5 children.

Research Notes:

With many thanks to Judith White who had already completed much of the White family research in Whitechapel and Buckinhgamshire. If you're researching the same White family, you'd do well to check Judith's website for additional information. I'm also happy to share info so please get in touch if you're looking into this White family.
